Tinkoff. Splitting the bill

An upsell feature R&D for a major fintech.

The process of distributing the bill among all party participants has never been so simple and fun.

Situation

It was a design challenge I entered in 2022, answered against a written brief and judged against other candidates’ submissions. Everything here is mine: the research, the flow, the algorithm, the screens and the prototype.

Task

Develop an interface for dividing the amount for a purchase between friends fairly and quickly. Make the process as painless as possible, so that it would help to upsell the main product.

Action

I argued the target should bepay a mixed bill for 5–10 people in less than 60 seconds, because an interface that can do it at the table can also do it the next morning, and the reverse is not true.

Result

A bright and fun tool with a drag-and-drop mechanic, which allowed you to instantly split the bill in many different scenarios of events.

You can add as many guests as you want — no need to enter their names or details. You just want a head to split the bill against.

You can split a single item on the bill between several people.

Judging by the phrase “closed bill” in the brief, it turns out that we are considering the next day situation, when our hero peels his aching head off the pillow, opens his phone and finds a charge for five-plus people.

In this case, if he did not manage to photograph the receipt yesterday, then most likely he will not be able to restore the order history. So we will assume that there is still a bill.

Guest

Trait

Misha

He didn’t eat a cheese plate because he’s allergic, so he doesn’t want to pay for it.

Confused Mary

She doesn’t remember what she ordered.

Righteous Mark

He doesn’t drink alcohol and won’t pay for it. That’s why he doesn’t want to split the bill equally.

Thirsty Kelly

Came literally for a minute and ordered a bottle of water.

Joey Who?

He sat down at our table and ordered 15 shots. We don’t know who he is.

There were no users and no data. Neither qualitative nor quantitative research was part of the task, and I did not manufacture any. What I did instead was reconstruct the situation in enough detail to design against it: a real restaurant receipt, and a party of five with their own traits that affect the splitting.

The worst case scenario is the best one to design for. Although the application supports any of the scenarios.
